Starston

Much has been written about the history of this attractive village and the surrounding area by the late Roy Riches who was born in the village in 1909. His My Village of Starston, reproduced here in its entirety was devoted to descriptions of life in the village and its history; Oddments contained much about Starston but also ventured further afield to take in Harleston and Homersfield, the River Waveney and the great flood of 1912. Apart from history, you will find descriptions of village life from the time of Roy Riches' youth. He expanded this rich seam of personal reminiscence and in Harleston wrote a chapter (which takes up nearly half the book) on his own life. We are privileged to include his Memories of 70 Years in the Area as a tribute to him and an example of how village life changed through the first three-quarters of the 20th Century.

You'll find a map of the village here.

Descriptions of the village and lists of the principal inhabitants were given in directories published in the nineteenth century. We have included extracts from White's Directory for 1845 and for 1883 (and links to the Starston entry in Kelly's Directory for Cambridgeshire, Norfolk & Suffolk for 1883).

To Starston Parish Council.
