Rotary Caravan Project

Update from Edward Thackray, President, The Rotary Club of Cambridge, Sun 2 April 2000.

1. Victor Bugg reports that a final total of 124 caravans set sail on Sat 1 Apr on the Mercury Ace bringing the total shipped so far close to 200.

2. Mitsui Shipping have told us that, due to their heavy commercial commitments, they are unlikely to be able to ship any more caravans until the autumn.

3. Victor had lunch with the senior management of the shipping company and Princess Katherine* and amongst many other things was told that the Princess has been speaking to Prince Charles recently and told him what wonderful things that Rotary are doing on this Project.

4. Cirencester Club had a three minute slot (long by television standards) on South West television about the Project and Jerry Robins has promised to send me a tape (he said that it all came over very positively for Rotary). The downside is that they have now been offered 46 extra caravans that we cannot ship at the moment!

5. Victor has had several messages along the line that this is the best thing that Rotary have been involved in for a very long time.

6. Princess Katherine asked Victor Bugg how ticket sales are going for her visit with HRH Crown Prince Alexander to the Aegean Evening at Chilford Hall, Cambridge on 2 May. (See the invitation)

7. Amusing anecdotes: When one club went to pick the caravan up from an 85 year old he decided that he had become too emotionally attached to it to let it go! In another case once someone heard that a caravan owner was going to give it to our Project they made him an offer that he could not refuse!

With best wishes

Edward
