The Jubilee Sailing
Trust is a national charity, based in Southampton, that provides the unique opportunity
for able-bodied and disabled people to sail together on the Trust's 55 metre tall ship,
the LORD NELSON. The LORD NELSON is uniquely designed to enable disabled people to take part in the day to day running of a tall ship with the minimum of assistance. To date, the ship has taken an amazing 14,699 people of all physical abilities to take part in this exhilarating experience. The voyages last from 4 to 10 days and cover the coasts of the British Isles, Europe and the Canary Islands. At the end of 1999 there was a celebratory Millennium Voyage to the Canary Islands. |
| Adaptations
to the traditional design of a three masted barque include: Flat, wide decks that facilitate access for wheelchair users. Lifts between decks for those with limited mobility - these can be operated by the user. A stair lift of the type used in the home. Vibrator pads fitted to the bunks, which alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing in the event of an emergency. An induction loop is fitted in the lower mess room to assist those with hearing impairment during the briefing sessions. However, in recent years, the LORD NELSON's capacity has been strained to the limit with the numbers of people wishing to experience the thrill and challenge of offshore sailing. In order to accommodate this growing number of voyagers, the Trust decided to build a second tall ship "Tenacious" and bring the spirit of integration ashore with the 'Shorewatch' holiday package. 'Shorewatch' is a residential, week-long holiday for all abilities that allows the participants to work alongside the professional shipwrights in the building of, what will be, the largest, wooden, tall ship in the world! Siberian Larch was chosen as the material for building and every component in the hull has been laminated from planks of this soft but dense wood. At 65 metres LOA and 675 tons displacement, she will present a fine sight when she bids farewell to the LORD NELSON from Southampton in April 2000. The LORD NELSON will be one of the entrants in the Tall Ships 2000 Race and the only ship to have a mixed ability crew. The new ship Tenacious is currently undergoing her 'fitting out' phase at the shipyard site in Woolston, Southampton. It is not often that the general public can view the entire process from a mezzanine floor that enables all visitors to have a birds eye view of the yard and the work taking place. The project is costing £14.5 million of which £10 million has already been raised. The aim for £4.5 million in the next year is a tall order but it is a challenge that embodies the spirit of the Trust.
