Short Stories About District 1080
On Saturday 9th October 1999, 5000 Bluebells and 1000 Daffodils were planted in Manor Wood, Letchworth in a combined effort by Letchworth and Letchworth Howard Rotary Clubs and their Inner Wheel Club.

The flowers were planted in 50 separate plots and they will be returning in Spring 2000 to weed them and ensure the success of this effort in environmental improvement.

OLD BANGERS
Two District Rotarians are executives on the Eastern Centre of the Austin-Healey Club. Rotarian Rob Ransom, Cambridge, is Chairman and John Raybould, Watton and District, is Webmaster/Secretary. Are there any other Healeying Rotarians out there? RETURN TO MADAGASCAR
Great Yarmouth Rotarian
Ted Lees, whose son tragically died in Madagascar whilst carrying out environmental work and reported in 1080 News, is planning to visit the island in November 2000.

Knowing that the Letchworth Howard Club, and possibly others, are supporting a project out there he wonders whether there may be sufficient Rotarians in the District who are interested in making a trip to enable savings to be made by negotiating a group travel rate.

The flight from Paris to Antanarivo is operated by Air Madagascar and they fly direct twice a week. "I have travelled with them and they have a couple of decent aircraft" says Ted in a less than ringing endorsement. The fare is currently £600. "Any surplus we made could always go to Rotary Charities," adds Ted.

To discuss the matter further, he can be contacted on 01603 270229 or: email ted.lees@virgin.net

See the article Mission To Madagascar about Ted's first visit in 1997.

It is often fascinating to know what Rotarians do in their spare time so you may be interested to learn that Norwich Rotary Club Past President David Cooke whiles away the hours tinkering with his Dinkies.

So much so that he has become an acknowledged media authority on Dinky Toys and October saw the publication of his book which records the history of this fascinating company. It contains 80 photographs illustrating over 600 individual toys from the firm's foundation in 1931 up to 1980. It is published by Shire Publications at a price of £3.95.

Fakenham President Peter Halls needed leave of absence in the New Year 2000, as he was part of a cricketing tour to New Zealand.

Peter, along with his Wife Ro, joined a team formed from the UK branch of the International Fellowship of Cricketing Rotarians which was playing throughout the Antipodes between 22nd February and 14th March 2000. They stopped off to play a team in California on the way and another in Fiji on the way back.

A total of seven matches against District and National sides were arranged as they toured North and South Island with accommodation arranged in Rotarians homes.
