Saxmundham's Peru Project Produces The Goods
On the 14th March Saxmundham Rotarian Archie Poulter returned home after 10 weeks work as a Rotary Volunteer at the Ciudad de los Niņos project in Lima, Peru. His mission to install the new carpentry workshop was successfully completed after 3 weeks. The remaining 7 weeks were spent training the teachers and a group of senior students in maintenance procedures and safe use of the machinery so that, by the time he left, the workshop was producing furniture for the orphanage. Archie says, "Working in a Third World country proved to be both testing and frustrating at times. Manaņa seems to express far too greater sense of urgency in Peru - except at the Ciudad where their enthusiasm makes things happen. I'm really thrilled with what's been achieved - the project is so successful and really worthwhile". |

| From the Matching
Grant application in March 1999 the project has taken only 9 months to complete the
carpentry workshop and the photographs show the rapid progress since work commenced in
September. This could only have been achieved with the full co-operation and hard work
from the San Borja Rotarians in Peru who have proved their willingness to ensure that our
money is spent. Saxmundham Rotary Club would like to thank all the clubs in 1080 who have so generously donated towards this Rotary project that will give 'A Skill for Life' to many hundreds of Street Children. Stage Two is to provide a bakery and Stage Three is to organise a clothes workshop and they also need help with an extension for their farming activities to start Guinea Pig production. If your club has not yet become involved with this exciting, educational, youth project and you would like to hear more please give Rotarian Peter Woodruff a call on 01728 604141. Either Peter, or Archie, will be delighted to come along and give your club a short talk about the Ciudad with some amusing anecdotes about experiences as a Rotary Volunteer.
